The M4 wave energy prototype will operate for 6 months off the coast of Albany, collecting valuable energy production data. This project is Australia’s only active wave energy initiative, proudly situated in the Great Southern region.

The Albany M4 Wave Energy Demonstration Project aims to demonstrate the technical feasibility of wave energy and its potential to decarbonize aquaculture operations. The 24-metre by 9.5-metre device, constructed by local manufacturers, will collect data on energy production and device performance.

Regional Development Minister Don Punch highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “The Albany M4 Wave Energy Demonstration Project is supporting research excellence, regional employment, and renewable energy supply chain development in the Great Southern by leveraging our State’s natural assets”.

Science Minister Stephen Dawson emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative: “This innovative project is bringing together top research bodies and local businesses to conduct this important trial, examining Albany as a potential nursery test site for wave energy developers”.

Member for Albany Rebecca Stephens expressed her excitement, noting, “The southern coastline of Western Australia’s Great Southern region has one of the best wave energy resources in the world. This is an exciting milestone for this Albany-based project”.

Congratulations to all involved in this ground-breaking initiative putting Albany at the forefront of renewable energy innovation.
