Although set in Tasmania, the production was filmed entirely in Albany, with locations including York, Parade and Festing streets, Marine Drive and Maitraya. Many local residents also appeared as extras, adding to the sense of community involvement.

Director Zak Hilditch welcomed the audience on the night, describing Albany as the film’s “true home” and highlighting the significance of the local premiere following screenings in Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta and Busselton.

The GSDC supported the production by assisting with location selection, connecting the crew to local networks, and helping ensure regional businesses benefitted throughout filming. The project highlights the broader value of screen production in the Great Southern, supporting local jobs, showcasing the region’s capacity to host major productions, and contributing to regional vibrancy.

We Bury the Dead is set for wider release in 2026.
