The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) is well underway with a master plan project for the Albany Waterfront, overseeing a coordinated approach in shaping its future over the next 25 years.
The first step in creating the Master Plan was a Stage 1 baseline report which focused on background research, initial stakeholder engagement, and site analysis to identify the opportunities and challenges within the precinct.
H+H Architects based in Albany led the research efforts, analysing historical documents, archival maps, and photography to understand the area’s historical, societal, and cultural contexts. They conducted extensive site analysis, examining geographical, urban, and architectural factors to inform future design and development strategies. Early consultation on the project brought together key stakeholders, including government bodies and cultural organisations, to discuss their interests and priorities.
Initial project priorities include heritage preservation, enhancing tourism, strengthening community connections, improving cultural pathways, and planning for future growth. Emerging themes focus on balancing colonial history, ensuring pedestrian access, creating safe travel routes, promoting development, and integrating local stories and experiences.
