The new 4-bedroom respite cottage at Hawthorne House provides world-class dementia support, offering comfort and accessible respite services within the Great Southern.

In round 1 of the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program, Alzheimer’s WA received a $200,000 grant to assist in the development of the facility. The construction of the cottage created local jobs, and the cottage will now generate additional employment opportunities and valuable training for students in health and aged care courses.

The opening event was attended by key figures including Alzheimer’s WA Chair Professor Warren Harding AM, who emphasized the pressing issue of dementia in the Great Southern. Each bedroom in Don’s Cottage has been created to provide a home-like atmosphere that promotes dignity and independence. The new model of care, with double bedrooms for both client and carer, is expected to be in high demand.
