Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan visited Kinjarling/Albany in October to launch Heartland Journeys, a new website exploring the Great Southern’s natural history, Noongar culture and ecosystem restoration work by local communities. Minister MacTiernan joined Gondwana Link Chief Executive Officer Keith Bradby for the launch at Oranje Tractor Wines.

The State Government supported the Heartland Journeys project with more than $155,000, of which $84,212 came via a Regional Economic Development Grant through the GSDC.

Heartland Journeys gives users an overview of the region’s landscapes and their development over deep time, stretching back three billion years, eventually leading to our extraordinary diversity of plants and animals. It surveys Noongar culture and the relatively recent impact of European agriculture following the settler era.

Itineraries on the website suggest routes to visit key points of interest with interpretation about the landscape, biology, culture and history. Heartland Journeys complements other trails being developed across the region, and the continuing work of groups such as Great Southern Treasures. Links are provided for visitors to further explore local tourism offerings.
