Minister for Regional Development Tours the Great Southern
GSDC hosted the Minister for Regional Development to mark major milestones and highlight the region’s role in shaping Western Australia’s future.
The GSDC recently hosted the Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Regional Development, for a multi-day tour of the region, spotlighting key projects and partnerships driving local progress.
A major highlight was the official opening of the Southern Ocean Surf Reef at Binalup/Middleton Beach in Albany — a $14 million project shaped by two decades of community advocacy. The reef is set to boost tourism, recreation, and the city’s coastal identity, marking a significant milestone in Albany’s revitalisation.

The visit also included the Great Southern Wine Industry Sundowner, where local producers shared insights into the region’s growing international profile. Despite global challenges, the Great Southern wine sector has achieved the highest percentage sales growth of any region in Australia, thanks to strategic collaboration and export development.

Other stops included meetings with RED Grant recipients Aspect Modular and Raintree Estate in Denmark, the opening of the KAARL Yarning Noongar gathering place in Katanning, and conversations with community and industry leaders throughout the region.

Visits like this are a valuable opportunity to showcase the region’s achievements, strengthen relationships across government and industry, and ensure that local voices and priorities are heard at the highest levels. GSDC was proud to facilitate the visit, reinforcing our commitment to driving inclusive, sustainable development across the Great Southern.
