More than $1 million for the Great Southern in REDs Round 8

Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson announced the six Great Southern recipients in Round 8 of the RED Grants program.

The RED Grants program is investing $60.85 million over 11 years in locally driven projects that stimulate economic growth and development across regional Western Australia. Through the previous seven rounds of RED Grants, the Great Southern has been awarded over $4.4m to support 46 projects. 

Round 8 of the program attracted strong interest, with 34 applications received across variety of sectors including, hospitality, agriculture, manufacturing and accommodation. 

Six Great Southern projects will share $1.02 million in funding under Round 8, supporting jobs, skills and economic diversification across the region. 

Castlehow Nominees Pty Ltd (trading as J&S Castlehow Electrical Services) – Sustainable and Local Switchboard Manufacturing 

A $200,000 grant has been awarded to purchase and install an industrial switchboard laser cutter, enabling the business to expand from minor fabrication into certified, advanced switchboard manufacturing. The investment will support advanced manufacturing in the Great Southern whilst creating new jobs and training opportunities. 

Fulcher Contractors Pty Ltd – Heavy Plant Workshop and Training Centre 

A new heavy plant workshop and training facility will be constructed at Fulcher Contractor’s Mount Barker operations. The project increases the company’s capacity to deliver civil contracting works while creating new opportunities for skilled workers, apprentices and trainees. A $200,000 grant was awarded for this project.  

Nowanup Noongar Boodjar Ltd – Construction of a Multipurpose Workshop 

$160,000 was awarded to construct a multipurpose workshop, supporting growth in Aboriginal led cultural tourism and environmental management. The project is expected strengthen Aboriginal employment opportunities and enhance land care management outcomes in the region. 

Frankland Landholdings Pty Ltd (trading as Frankland Rural) – Agribusiness Expansion Project 

The project will expand local agronomy, soil testing and advisory services through a purpose built agribusiness hub in Frankland River. This hub will boost local expenditure and service availability in the middle and upper Great Southern with the support of a $180,000 grant.    

Denmark Hotel Operations Pty Ltd – Revitalising the Denmark Hotel’s Upstairs Accommodation 

A $175,000 grant has been awarded to revitalise their upstairs accommodation. With the area currently unused, these upgrades will increase the options and availability of premium budget accommodation for short-term workers and travellers.  

Yefsea Pty Ltd – Albany Waterfront Marina Seafood and Takeaway Fit-out 

A new locally owned seafood restaurant and takeaway will be constructed at the Albany Waterfront. The project seeks to activate the waterfront precinct, create local jobs, and strengthen demand for locally caught seafood. $105,000 has been awarded to support the fit out of this new venue.  

The RED Grant Program is a State Government initiative administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and delivered locally by the Great Southern Development Commission.
