Supporting Arts, Culture and Heritage

The Great Southern region’s arts, culture, and heritage sectors enrich community life, promote economic development, and enhance regional wellbeing, with the GSDC actively supporting efforts to strengthen these vital areas.

Arts, Culture and Heritage in the Great Southern

The Great Southern region boasts a rich tapestry of arts, culture, and heritage, playing a vital role in creating vibrant, diverse, and engaging communities for both residents and visitors. Culture reflects identity and way of life, while the arts express this through various forms such as language, literature, music, dance, and drama. Heritage connects the past with the present and future, fostering a sense of identity and continuity. These sectors not only enrich daily life but also significantly contribute to economic development through employment, entertainment, and tourism. The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) understands the significance of arts, culture, and heritage and actively supports efforts to strengthen these areas. By promoting community engagement, attracting tourists, and supporting local enterprises, increased investment in these sectors ultimately enhances the region’s overall wellbeing and growth.

Great Southern Arts, Culture & Heritage Strategy

The Great Southern Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy, developed in 2022, aims to enhance the visibility and value of arts, culture, and heritage in the region. Funded by the Departments of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Primary Industries and Regional Development, the strategy was created in collaboration with the City of Albany, the Great Southern Development Commission, and regional shires. It focuses on three key areas: cultural identity, experience, and capacity and investment. The strategy sets a vision for the region to become a networked, resilient, and enterprising cultural hub, promoting community engagement, economic development, and cultural tourism. By fostering partnerships, improving infrastructure, and supporting local talent, the strategy aims to position the Great Southern as a vibrant and attractive place to live, work, visit, and invest, ensuring sustainable growth and a rich cultural legacy for future generations.
