Further development of tertiary education in the Great Southern
Students at the centre can undertake a complete degree or can choose to complete first-year studies in Albany before transitioning to the Crawley campus of UWA in Perth. School-leavers and mature-age students are well-supported at the centre, which offers a personalised and friendly environment.
Honours and postgraduate studies are offered at the centre, and a Master of Ecotourism degree that is delivered at the centre is the only postgraduate course of its kind offered in Western Australia.
Further development of tertiary education in the Great Southern will be enhanced by affordable student accommodation at the nearby Norman House precinct and, under construction, at the old Albany Primary School site in Serpentine Road.
Spin-offs from the collaboration between the GSDC and the UWA Albany Centre include the establishment of the neighbouring Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management and the initiation of the Great Southern Festival program of Perth International Arts Festival events that ran from 2003 to 2017. The nearby Great Southern Marine Research Facility hosts the Wave Energy Research Centre.
The UWA Albany Centre hosts regular public lectures from visiting academics. The GSDC sponsors an annual scholarship for an honours student at the centre.
