Putting planning into action: inland drought resilience
The three community-led projects support the implementation of the Inland Great Southern Regional Drought Resilience Plan…
The first round of grant funding to support the implementation of the Inland Great Southern Regional Drought Resilience Plan was awarded in October 2025, assisting delivery of local projects across the Inland Great Southern to better equip our communities for future drought.
The three community-led projects funded through this grant round are now nearing completion, each delivering proactive, on-ground investments in our communities.
Southern Dirt – Summer-Proofing Our Gardens: community workshops and take-home resources for drought resilience

Through a series of hands-on workshops, the team at Southern Dirt built practical drought resilience skills, empowering households, schools and community groups to establish waterwise, heat-tolerant and sustainable gardens.
Southern Dirt has delivered its Summer-Proofing workshops at Tambellup Primary School and the Kojonup Community Garden. Participants received a “Summer-proof Your Garden” booklet and a starter kit to take home and continue their learning.

Gnowangerup Aboriginal Corporation – Enhancing the capacity and connectivity of the Gnowangerup Noongar Centre

Through the Inland Drought Fund, the Centre is receiving upgrades to its communal kitchen, enabling Gnowangerup Aboriginal Corporation to expand its workshop program, strengthen the community’s emergency response capacity, and encourage cultural exchange and intergenerational engagement.
With upgrades nearing completion, the community is already looking forward with consultation underway regarding future activities at the Centre, and recent workshops delivered on site.
Gillamii Centre – Resilient Country, Connected Communities: planning for landscape renewal in the Inland Great Southern

Gillamii received funding to build drought resilience across the Inland Great Southern by engaging landholders and community members in planning for revegetation and landscape restoration.
Through this funding, Gillamii has engaged in community consultation and education, published revegetation guides to promote plant biodiversity and healthier landscapes, and developed a map of future revegetation sites for targeted restoration efforts. Learn more via Gillamii’s website.
GSDC is pleased to have worked alongside these local projects to deliver real impacts in our communities and shape a resilient future for the Great Southern.
The Inland Great Southern Regional Drought Resilience Plan was delivered by GSDC in 2023. It encompasses the Inland Great Southern shires of Katanning, Kojonup, Woodanilling, Kent, Broomehill-Tambellup, Cranbrook, Gnowangerup and Jerramungup.
The Plan is a community-led, evidence-based strategy developed with input from local governments and regional stakeholders to help the region prepare for, and increase resilience to, the impacts of drought and a drying climate. It emphasises proactive actions across water, agriculture, communities, landscapes and the regional economy.

The Plan was funded through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
The Future Drought Fund (FDF) is a long-term investment by the Australian Government to help Australian farmers and communities become more prepared for, and resilient to, the impacts of drought. The Regional Drought Resilience Planning (RDRP) program sits under the FDF and supports regional communities to develop Drought Resilience Plans to prepare for and manage future drought risks.
